The covers on these books are probably not conveying what they need to convey. These are excellent examples of historical fiction. But with their lengthy portions devoted to the plight of characters besides Arn's time in a convent, Guillou's Crusades Trilogy has less in common Bernard Cornwell's take on the Middle Ages and than it does with Ken Follett's or Umberto Eco's.

The novel continues to follow Arn during his 20 year service in the Order of the Templar knights and Cecilias' stay in the convent Gudhem. Even though it's the second book in the trilogy, I think it also works as a standalone novel.I love how the characters and the story develops. You can see that the writer did a really good job not just with research of the historical period but also how he made the story progress and develop. A bit disappointed with The Templar Knight which followed the fantastic 1st book of this trilogy (first one is The Road to Jerusalem). Although well written and full of great characters, the story was a bit erratic at times. 3.5 stars.

fantastic continuation if the first book

Best book in the trilogy in my opinion. Depiction of Saladin is very interesting even though it is false.You will find conversations about Christianity and Islam between Saladin and Arn very enjoyable.Would recommend for all people even if you are not into history.
