I'm not really sure why this story arc was so popular - I think it was mostly due to Jim Lee being the artist. It's an okay Batman story and does further the larger arcs in his life a bit, but it's not exactly worth the hype in my opinion. The major plot points turn on several unrealistic "surprise!" gimmicks; in that respect it's more of a somewhat lame attempt at a big shake-up in the batverse thriller than a solid or intriguing detective story.Jeph Loeb essentially wrote the same Batman story three times in a row, but a little worse each time. I had read this years ago and remembered it as being so good, but it's mediocre at best.
I freely admit I'm not a Batman lover. And this wacky conclusion to the Hush series reaffirms that. Melodrama and completely ridiculous "BUT WAIT" moments populate the pages. I know this was supposed to be a detective story, but even I figured out the ending well ahead of the WORLD'S GREATEST DETECTIVE. And Batman is an even worse boyfriend than the duds I've dated; just look at his last conversation with Catwoman. Can we say attachment anxiety?
The whole things gets a little melodramatic and barmy but it also functions as a Batmans greatest hits. I like the portrayal of Huntress and Tim Drake and even The Riddler but Harolds story is pretty awful and Ras and Talia suffer from not being as exotic as they once were. Still, good stuff.
Just like any other batman stories or movies this one was great. One book I would read twice.
This is another book that I really wished I could give a 3.5 to. I did like it, quite a bit, but the more I chew on it, the more I find little flaws here and there. Ultimately, I ended up thinking that the cavalcade of stars worked fine, though I do feel like I was drowning in them by the end, and had a little trouble remembering who was doing what. I could see the ending from way back on page 2 of the first volume, and had hope that I was wrong at many points in the book with different red
I had to pick this up as soon as I could after finishing volume one. This volume was just as good. I loved the relationships between characters, I loved the fake reveals that kept you guessing, I loved the final reveal, I loved the art. Overall I loved this whole story and I know I'll be coming back at some point in the future to re read both volumes.
