Astonishing X-Men, Volume 3: Torn (Astonishing X-Men (2004) (Collected Editions) #3)
Another very entertaining collection, and Whedon’s knack of knowing how to combine superpowers with plotting and character stuff really shines here. The only real criticism I could make is that if you haven’t read Grant Morrison’s run on New X-Men then you might be lost at certain points.
This series is so fucking good I need to buy every single one of the comic books!!! I never want this to end, I'm honestly thriving, they are feeding me so well
Score: 4.13 out of 5Grade: 83% (A-) | GreatThe X-Men are gutted from the inside-out as their own worst fears come to light. Here is my review of Astonishing X-Men Vol. 3: Torn: The Good:Oh Whedon, you sly dog you pulled some fast ones on us here. This book has a few unsettling twists, a couple completely unexpected surprises, and a splash of some HOLY F*** moments. And we FINALLY learn who the destroyer of the Breakworld isand it definitely wasnt someone I expected! Whedon is funnyI sound like
Whedon steps up his writing in these issues compared to vol. 1 and 2. These bound issues are a fine example of how good of a read comics can be.
The X-Men are betrayed by someone close to them as a series of psychic attacks leave Cyclops in a coma, Beast going feral, Kitty phasing to the center of the earth, and Wolverine acting like a cowardly 19th century gentleman. Meanwhile, the alien from Breakworld who has future knowledge that an X-Man will destroy his planet has broken free of government custody and is on his way to the mansion to make a bad situation worse. All of which is a pretty average Wednesday at Xaviers School for Gifted
Wow! That's one heck of a cliffhanger at the end of this volume!! Good thing I have the next one lined up ready to go at the library. I can't even imagine waiting for this the next month when these were coming out as monthly installments. Hilarious (especially Logan), poignant and action-packed, this volume is all things awesome. Great Stuff!
This one really got back to the drama the Morrison run of New X-Men brought to the table. Until the last two issues of this particular arc, the action was at a minimum (vol 1 and vol 2 were too action-heavy for me) and the ethical and moral conundrums of what being an X-Man was the main point. The art remains great but the real prize is the coloring which fits the psychological mood of the first issues so well, especially when some crazy psychic shit is going down!Arcs Covered:Torn (#13-#18): The

Took me far too long to get to Vol. 3, so I just read 1-3 in a row again. This is where things get ratcheted up a notch. There's enough mindfucks here to confuse you, but enough good stuff to keep you guessing and going along with everything. Emma Frost has turned to her evil ways, helping Cassandra Nova, and with the 2 powerful telepaths, the X-Men are in serious trouble, especially when the Hellfire Club accompanies Frost and Nova. Joss Whedon loves Kitty Pride, and here she really shines,This series is so fucking good I need to buy every single one of the comic books!!! I never want this to end, I'm honestly thriving, they are feeding me so well
